DESCRIPTION:This week\, we will be meeting at the Hy-Vee Papillion Community Room.\n\nOur current book is  “A History of the World in Twelve Shipwrecks” by David Gibbins.\n\n\n\n\n\nAre you looking to engage in thoughtful (and/or fun) discussions and connect with fellow book lovers? Join the Omaha Metro Area Humanist Association’s Weekly Book Club! We gather every week to explore the latest chapters of our selected book\, engage in lively conversations\, and enjoy a relaxed lunch together. Our meetups offer a welcoming environment for those interested in deepening their knowledge on a variety of thought-provoking topics. \nOur book club focuses on a wide range of primarily non-fiction genres that inspire curiosity and expand our understanding of the world. From the history of world philosophies and scientific discoveries to the evolution of humanity—both physical and psychological—we cover books that encourage critical thinking and meaningful dialogue. We typically complete a book in 4-6 weeks\, allowing for an in-depth exploration of each topic. \nWe look forward to welcoming you to our community of readers and thinkers! \n(Because we pay HyVee for the use of this room\, we do ask for a contribution to the Tip Jar to help cover that cost.  ~ $2 per person would be ideal; but it is voluntary.) \nDon’t be put off by a smattering of RSVPs here.  We typically have 12-20 around the table\, in any case.

DESCRIPTION:Third Thursday — August 20th\, 6:30 to 8:30 PM\nFilm Screening: Democracy Noir \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDemocracy Noir is a 2024 political documentary directed by Oscar-nominee Connie Field. The film chronicles the systematic dismantling of democratic institutions in Hungary under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán\, framing his regime as a blueprint for modern authoritarianism admired by right-wing movements globally. \nThe narrative focuses on the rise of Orbán’s Fidesz party\, which utilized free elections to secure power before altering constitutions\, capturing the judiciary\, and seizing control of the media to cement one-party rule. The documentary draws explicit parallels between Orbán’s methods and contemporary political trends in the United States\, noting Orbán’s influence on figures like Donald Trump and policies such as Project 2025. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n \nWe’ll screen the film and open the floor for discussion afterward. The event is free and open to the public.
