SUMMARY:Secular Book Club - In Person - May 24th
DESCRIPTION:We will be discussing our current book\, “Abundance” by Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson.  We’re still early in the book\, so it would be easy to catch up\, if you’re new.  Our current target for reading this week is to complete through Ch 4 “Invent.” \nAbundance\, a 2025 political and economic nonfiction book by Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson\, argues that America’s crises in housing\, energy\, and innovation stem from manufactured scarcity rather than natural limits. The authors contend that regulations designed to solve 1970s problems now block the construction of affordable housing and clean energy infrastructure\, creating a politics of scarcity that prevents progress. The book proposes a new politics of abundance grounded in a simple thesis: to have the future we want\, we must build and invent more of what we need.  \n\n\n\n\nAre you looking to engage in thoughtful (and/or fun) discussions and connect with fellow book lovers? Join the Omaha Metro Area Humanist Association’s Weekly Book Club! We gather every week to explore the latest chapters of our selected book\, engage in lively conversations\, and enjoy a relaxed lunch together. Our meetups offer a welcoming environment for those interested in deepening their knowledge on a variety of thought-provoking topics. \nOur book club focuses on a wide range of primarily non-fiction genres that inspire curiosity and expand our understanding of the world. From the history of world philosophies and scientific discoveries to the evolution of humanity—both physical and psychological—we cover books that encourage critical thinking and meaningful dialogue. We typically complete a book in 4-6 weeks\, allowing for an in-depth exploration of each topic. \nWe look forward to welcoming you to our community of readers and thinkers! \n(Because we pay HyVee for the use of this room\, we do ask for a contribution to the Tip Jar to help cover that cost.  ~ $2 per person would be ideal; but it is voluntary.) \nDon’t be put off by a smattering of RSVPs here.  We typically have 12-20 around the table\, in any case.

SUMMARY:Third Thursday | Orwell: 2+2=5
DESCRIPTION:This month’s Third Thursday brings us Orwell: 2+2=5\, a 2025 documentary that feels tailor-made for this moment. \nProduced\, written\, and directed by Raoul Peck\, the film follows the career of George Orwell — particularly the lessons of Nineteen Eighty-Four — tracing how his political observations continue to resonate in the face of contemporary authoritarianism. Damian Lewis narrates the film as Orwell\, lending his voice to the writer’s own letters and journals\, while Peck interweaves cinematic references and modern-day footage to craft a fresh portrait of just how prophetic Orwell’s work has become. \nThe film premiered at Cannes in 2025\, where it was nominated for the L’Œil d’or\, and went on to win Best Score and Best Narration at the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards. \n \nWe’ll screen the film and open the floor for discussion afterward. The event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:All Roads Lead to the South!
DESCRIPTION:Join folks from across the Omaha metro area on Saturday\, May 16\, from 1pm to 3pm at 72nd & Dodge for an ALL ROADS LEAD TO THE SOUTH visibility event!  Come to the OMAHA picnic at noon\, and then join the event! \nIn light of the Supreme Court’s gutting of the Voting Rights Act\, civil and voting rights groups are organizing a grassroots National Day of Action across the U.S. on Saturday\, May 16th. \n While Trump’s administration dismantles the Voting Rights Act piece by piece\, people across the country are organizing in solidarity — and you’re invited to be part of it. \nThis national day of action — taking place on Saturday\, May 16\, 2026 — is intended to bring communities together through peaceful\, nonpartisan civic engagement activities focused on democracy\, voting rights\, community empowerment\, and public education. \nOur parents and grandparents marched\, organized\, and fought to secure voting rights and expand democracy in America. Today\, communities across the country are being called to continue that work through organizing\, civic engagement\, coalition building\, public education\, and collective action rooted in the legacy of Freedom Summer.
