SUMMARY:Secular Book Club- Papillion Hy-Vee Community Room Oct 25\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:This week\, we will be meeting at the Hy-Vee Papillion Community Room.\nOur current book\, “The Demon Haunted World”\,  isn’t new\, however the world in which we are reading it is.   We are looking through the eyes of Carl Sagan\, 30+ years ago. Some of us may believe he was prescient.   This week\, our target is to read through  will be to read  Ch 4\, representing approximately 40 pages\, depending on format.  [The audio version is read by Cary Elwes (Princess Bride)\, Seth McFarlane (Family Guy)\, and Ann Druyan (Cosmos; widow of Carl Sagan).]\n\n\n\n\nAre you looking to engage in thoughtful (and/or fun) discussions and connect with fellow book lovers? Join the Omaha Metro Area Humanist Association’s Weekly Book Club! We gather every week to explore the latest chapters of our selected book\, engage in lively conversations\, and enjoy a relaxed lunch together. Our meetups offer a welcoming environment for those interested in deepening their knowledge on a variety of thought-provoking topics. \nOur book club focuses on a wide range of primarily non-fiction genres that inspire curiosity and expand our understanding of the world. From the history of world philosophies and scientific discoveries to the evolution of humanity—both physical and psychological—we cover books that encourage critical thinking and meaningful dialogue. We typically complete a book in 4-6 weeks\, allowing for an in-depth exploration of each topic. \nWe look forward to welcoming you to our community of readers and thinkers! \n(Because we pay HyVee for the use of this room\, we do ask for a contribution to the Tip Jar to help cover that cost.  ~ $2 per person would be ideal; but it is voluntary.) \nDon’t be put off by a smattering of RSVPs here.  We typically have 12-20 around the table\, in any case.

SUMMARY:Third Thursday | AI for Humans
DESCRIPTION:Third Thursday — October 15th\, 6:30 to 8:30 PM\nFive questions about the machines\, and one question about your host \nSomewhere right now\, some very clever people are trying to build a mind that can outthink yours. They’d prefer you didn’t lose sleep over it. \nThis month’s documentary takes on the questions everyone is quietly asking about artificial intelligence\, and it handles them with dry British wit and some unsettling candor: \n\nWhat is “superintelligence\,” really?\nIs it coming for my job?\nWhat actually happens in the two seconds after I ask a chatbot a question?\nWhat if it all goes right?\nAnd can I trust anything it tells me?\n\nAlong the way you’ll meet a Bletchley Park codebreaker who warned in 1965 that a sufficiently clever machine might be “the last invention” we ever need to make. You’ll see entry-level jobs quietly disappear\, and companies sheepishly rehire the humans they replaced. Data centers draw as much power as small cities\, enough that Three Mile Island is coming back online to feed them. An AI cracks a 50-year-old biology puzzle and helps win a Nobel Prize. A Swedish cancer-screening program catches tumors that doctors missed. And a synthetic “actress” suddenly starts speaking Cantonese on live television. \n \nOne piece of advice: watch your host closely. By the end of the evening\, you may have some questions about who\, or what\, has been talking to you all night. \nAs humanists\, we put our trust in evidence\, reason\, and human judgment\, and few technologies test all three the way this one does. Join us for the film\, then stay for a conversation about what we want from these machines\, who gets to decide\, and how a thinking person can tell what’s real anymore. \nFree and open to the public. Curious skeptics are especially welcome.

SUMMARY:Third Thursday | Democracy Noir
DESCRIPTION:Third Thursday — August 20th\, 6:30 to 8:30 PM\nFilm Screening: Democracy Noir \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDemocracy Noir is a 2024 political documentary directed by Oscar-nominee Connie Field. The film chronicles the systematic dismantling of democratic institutions in Hungary under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán\, framing his regime as a blueprint for modern authoritarianism admired by right-wing movements globally. \nThe narrative focuses on the rise of Orbán’s Fidesz party\, which utilized free elections to secure power before altering constitutions\, capturing the judiciary\, and seizing control of the media to cement one-party rule. The documentary draws explicit parallels between Orbán’s methods and contemporary political trends in the United States\, noting Orbán’s influence on figures like Donald Trump and policies such as Project 2025. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n \nWe’ll screen the film and open the floor for discussion afterward. The event is free and open to the public.
